ANIME NEWS MEGA RECAP: AUGUST 16 TO AUGUST 23, 2026 — Anime NYC Delivers the BIGGEST Netflix Slate of the Year, THE ONE PIECE Remake's Key Art Revealed, Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2 Gets October 20, Blue Eye Samurai Season 2 and 3 Confirmed, Oshi No Ko Enters Its Final Season, and India Gets Mob Psycho in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu!
Hello and welcome back, anime fans! If last week's WIT Studio teaser had you losing sleep wondering what August 20 would bring, then buckle up, because the week of August 16 to August 23, 2026 delivered one of the single most information-dense anime news events of the entire year: Anime NYC 2026 at the Javits Convention Center in New York. Netflix alone dropped eight separate anime slate updates in one mega-panel — release dates, trailers, and first-look images for some of the biggest titles in the industry. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 finally has its date. Blue Eye Samurai got both a Season 2 AND a confirmed Season 3. Fool Night revealed its Netflix debut. LEGO ONE PIECE dropped its trailer. And the mystery that WIT Studio had been teasing for over a week turned out to be something genuinely spectacular — the first key visual for THE ONE PIECE, WIT Studio's complete remake of Eiichiro Oda's legendary manga. Beyond Anime NYC, Oshi no Ko revealed its Final Season teaser, Haikyu!! Day delivered a flood of new information, Apothecary Diaries confirmed its opening theme by Yorushika, and India got a beautiful gift with Mob Psycho 100 arriving in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu. Let us go through every single story because this week deserves nothing less than complete coverage.
ANIME NYC 2026: NETFLIX'S MASSIVE ANIME SLATE — Every Single Announcement From the Javits Center
Let us start with the single biggest story of the entire week. Anime NYC 2026 ran from August 20 to August 23 at the Javits Convention Center in New York City, and on Thursday, August 20, Netflix animation returned to the main stage at Anime NYC 2026, and attendees were spoiled with exclusive new info. The room was packed with fans, many in cosplay of their favorite titles. Attendees were gifted with One Piece minifigure mystery packages containing one of six characters. What followed was described by multiple outlets as the Netflix anime slate's biggest update of 2026 — with trailers, premiere dates, and first-look images for eight animated titles. Let us go through every single one.
1. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 — October 20, 2026, All 10 Episodes at Once!
The staff for the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 anime unveiled a new teaser trailer for the anime, announcing the anime's October 20 debut date on Netflix. It presents a new standalone 10-episode story from the world of Cyberpunk 2077 — a raw chronicle of redemption and revenge. When the world is blinded by spectacle, what extremes do you have to go to make your story matter? Rapper RICO NASTY wrote and performed "YOU CAN'T RUN FROM ME" for the anime, and it appeared in the second teaser trailer.
CD Projekt Red and TRIGGER shared the new trailer, giving a deeper look at the eclectic cast of the show and the tone this season might be going for. During the Anime Expo 2026 premiere of the first episode of the second season, CD Projekt wanted to make one thing clear: if season 1 was a Michael Bay movie, they were aiming for Martin Scorsese with season 2. It's not a roller coaster ride, but rather a more down-to-earth take on the world of Night City and the people who live there. These aren't David's crew from the first season of Edgerunners. The Studio Trigger anime — co-produced by CD Projekt Red — is going anthology style, introducing a new band of netrunners and metallic ne'er-do-wells. The series stars a new cast including Roman, a young boy shown capturing the horrors of Night City on his camera, and the season begins with Roman seeing and recording something he shouldn't have been exposed to. The first episode already screened at Anime Expo in July, with first reactions calling it "very special." For every fan who has been waiting since 2022 for a return to Night City, October 20 is now permanently circled.
2. Blue Eye Samurai Season 2 — January 2027! And Season 3 is ALREADY Confirmed!
Animated by Blue Spirit, season two of Blue Eye Samurai sees roaming samurai Mizu (Maya Erskine) continue her vengeful journey in search of her father in London. Meanwhile, back in Japan, Mizu's companion Ringo (Masi Oka) searches for a new purpose in life while Akemi (Brenda Song) and Taigen (Darren Barnet) navigate the politics of Edo Castle under a new, dangerous shogun. The series, by writers and showrunners Amber Noizumi and Michael Green, returns in January 2027. And in a genuinely thrilling piece of news for the show's passionate fanbase: Netflix also confirmed that Blue Eye Samurai has been greenlit for a third and final season, tying up Mizu's quest for revenge. Blue Eye Samurai has been one of the most critically acclaimed animated series of the 2020s, and confirming both Season 2's date and Season 3's existence in the same announcement is a huge vote of confidence in one of Netflix's most prestigious animated properties.
3. Fool Night — November 26, 2026 Netflix Debut!
"Fool Night" anime series revealed a new teaser PV and November 26 [Thu] Netflix debut of all episodes. Kasumi Yasuda's manga Fool Night is soon to blossom onto Netflix — the series tells the story of a young man living in a world of darkness after a thick layer of clouds made it so there's no sunlight. That caused plants to die and oxygen to struggle. But humans found a solution called transfloration where humans are allowed to transform into plants, and you get taken care of for the 2 years it takes you to transform if you choose this path. This is the historic first-ever Sunrise x SHAFT collaboration that had generated so much excitement when it was first revealed back in June, and now it has a confirmed release date. The production team said: "Across the visuals, music, and direction, we feel that we achieved a high level of artistry. I hope people will look forward to it." All episodes drop at once on November 26 — mark that Thanksgiving-week date for one of the most anticipated new anime of the year.
4. Bass X Machina — November 3, 2026! Steampunk Western Starring Brian Tyree Henry!
Executive producer and star Brian Tyree Henry appeared to introduce the first official teaser for Bass X Machina, a hyper-stylized steampunk western inspired by Bass Reeves, the first Black marshal in American history. Henry voices Bass, a kill-first, gunslinging bounty hunter with a mechanical arm that transforms into a double-barrel shotgun within seconds. Animated by Studio Mir (The Legend of Korra/Devil May Cry), the show stars Brian Tyree Henry, musician and actor Janelle Monáe, Tati Gabrielle (Mortal Kombat II), and seasoned voice actor Cree Summer. Bass, a father forced to become judge, jury, and executioner in a lawless Steampunk West, faces brutal outlaws, machines, and supernatural terrors to protect his family. The series premieres on November 3, 2026. Interestingly, Netflix's announcement listed Bass X Machina with minimal detail compared to other titles despite its deep creative bench, which some observers found a curious choice given the star power involved.
5. LEGO ONE PIECE — Official Trailer Revealed!
"Lego One Piece Animated Special's Trailer Highlights Usopp's Tall Tales" was one of the major Thursday reveals at Anime NYC. Netflix has released the official trailer for LEGO ONE PIECE, along with several new images. The project brings the world of ONE PIECE into LEGO-style animation, adding another ONE PIECE-related title to Netflix's growing lineup of projects. The special is confirmed to premiere on September 29, 2026, giving One Piece fans of all ages a wonderfully silly and creative way to enjoy the Straw Hats' adventures in an entirely new visual format.
6, 7, 8. Sakamoto Days Season 2 New Characters, ARMORED TROOPER VOTOMS Reboot Trailer, and More!
"Sakamoto Days" Season 2 also introduced several new characters as part of the night's broader wave of reveals. Sakamoto Days Season 2 was previously confirmed for January 2027 with new cast members revealed just prior to Anime NYC, and this new character introduction continues building anticipation for the assassin-turned-shopkeeper's next chapter. Separately, "ARMORED TROOPER VOTOMS Die Graue Hexe" was previewed in a main trailer during the same news cycle, bringing one of anime's most beloved classic mecha franchises back into the spotlight with a brand new project. Anime NYC also held panels for Big West/Macross, and celebrated English dub premieres of Go Forward.
Overall, Netflix showed off a new trailer, provided images, and confirmed release dates across this extraordinary slate presentation — with anime programming now available across more than 190 countries in up to 34 languages, Netflix's aggressive investment strategy shows absolutely no signs of slowing down.
THE MYSTERY SOLVED: WIT STUDIO's Attack on Titan Tease Was Actually THE ONE PIECE Key Visual!
Remember last week's cliffhanger? WIT Studio posted a teaser on August 13 with six character silhouettes, an Attack on Titan copyright line, and a promise that "the information is unsealed" on August 20. Well, August 20 arrived, and the reveal turned out to be something even more fascinating than most fans anticipated. The One Piece anime remake's key art pays homage to the two-page color splash spread that opens "Romance Dawn: The Dawn of Adventure" — the very first chapter of Eiichiro Oda's original manga.
Yes — THE ONE PIECE, WIT Studio's complete remake of Eiichiro Oda's legendary manga for Netflix, is what that mysterious teaser was building toward all along. We still have six more months until The One Piece releases, but the staff provided us one more tease in the form of a new key art. Netflix will begin streaming "all seven episodes" of the first season of The One Piece anime worldwide in February 2027. The seven episodes will recount the story from the first 50 manga chapters over the course of about 300 minutes.
Mayumi Tanaka will reprise her role as Monkey D. Luffy from the ongoing One Piece television anime. This detail alone is deeply moving for longtime fans — Tanaka has voiced Luffy since the original anime began in 1999, and her continued presence bridges the beloved original series with this bold new reimagining. Masashi Koizuka (Attack on Titan, Moonrise) is directing the new anime at Wit Studio. This explains the AoT branding on the original teaser — Koizuka's Attack on Titan pedigree connects the two properties through shared creative talent even though the story itself is entirely One Piece.
Other confirmed staff include Yasuhiro Kajino (In/Spectre prop designer) as creature designer, Ken Imaizumi and Shuhei Fukuda as action animators, Tomonori Kuroda (The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House) as background art director, Yuki Hayashi (My Hero Academia) as music composer, and Ryoma Kawamura as animation producer. Series composition is by Taku Kishimoto, whose adaptation work on Haikyuu is considered a gold standard for faithful yet efficient long-form manga adaptation.
The newly revealed concept art captures a moment in Windmill Village, where the story's protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy, spent his childhood. The scene shows Luffy enjoying a lively time at the village bar, Partys Bar, alongside the visiting Red-Hair Pirates captain Shanks and first mate Benn Beckman, and the bar's owner, Makino. Rendered with a warm and gentle touch, the visual shows Shanks smiling at Luffy's boundless energy, while Makino's expression and the cozy atmosphere of the bar hint at the unexpected kindness of the Red-Hair Pirates, despite their fearsome reputation.
From the concept art and early stills revealed, THE ONE PIECE's art style features a warm, watercolor-influenced visual identity. Character designs feel more grounded and expressive, and the world design has the kind of detailed, lived-in quality that WIT's work on Vinland Saga was known for. It's a modernized look while keeping the spirit of Oda's original designs. The original anime lives primarily on Crunchyroll with its 1,100-episode catalog. Netflix hosting the remake means it will be recommended to hundreds of millions of subscribers who don't normally look for anime.
Importantly: this series will be set in a separate continuity from the current TV anime series, which continues to charge ahead at full power after more than 25 years. This is an addition, not a replacement — the beloved Toei Animation series continues its weekly Elbaph Arc broadcast on Crunchyroll exactly as before. THE ONE PIECE is a completely separate creative reimagining meant to give the story a fresh, modernized entry point for new audiences worldwide, while the classic anime keeps sailing on for existing fans.
HAIKYU!! DAY 2026 — Movie 2, TV Special, and a Manga Remix All Revealed!
Volleyball anime fans, this was your day. Haikyu!! Day 2026 delivered numerous new announcements on August 19. As fans know, Haikyu!! has two major projects in the works: the movie, Haikyu!! VS The Little Giant and the TV special episode Where Monsters Go.
Haikyu!! VS The Little Giant focuses on the quarterfinal match between Karasuno and Kamomedai, home to the "tiny giants," set to release in 2027. The Little Giant game follows directly after where the last film, The Battle of the Garbage Dump, left off. The match highlights two young volleyball players. Production I.G. was previously confirmed as the animation studio, with Susumu Mitsunaka in charge of the direction and script.
The TV special Where Monsters Go focuses on the match between Fukurodani Academy and Mujinazaka High School, when Kotaro Bokuto faces Wakatsu Kiryu, in the quarterfinals of the 2013 Spring National Tournament. The match will be full of incredible spikes from the fourth-ranked and third-ranked student-aces in Japan.
Perhaps the most exciting tease for longtime fans: a final Haikyu!! movie (or two) is slated to come out following both Where Monsters Go and The Little Giant, finishing the 2013 Tokyo Spring Nationals arc and the timeskip. Fans cannot wait for the confirmed timeskip series, which hopefully features the MSBY Black Jackals versus Schweiden Adlers game. The film(s) will likely be set for 2028-2030. Interestingly, the official website previously removed the "Final" wording from the branding, suggesting that there may be something beyond the project — a detail that has fans dreaming about even more Haikyu!! content beyond what has already been confirmed.
On the merchandise and manga side, Furudate drew new illustrations of Kotaro Bokuto, Korai Hoshiumi and Kiyoomi Sakusa for a collaboration promoting a real volleyball league during its upcoming season. Another new illustration was revealed, drawn by Black Clover creator Yuki Tabata, who illustrated Toru Oikawa for the fourth Haikyu!! Volleyball Card Game!! BREAK booster pack, titled "Talent and Sense." The illustration will appear as a special "Itadaki Art Vobaka" card. The booster pack opened for pre-orders on August 19 and will release on October 24, 2026. One of the first major updates released about the volleyball anime is a new remix manga entitled HAIKYU!! New information was also revealed for the upcoming Haruichi Furudate Haikyu!! Exhibition: Challengers, including a third newly drawn key visual titled "Approach (Tobio Kageyama)," with the exhibition focusing on the development of Shoyo Hinata, Tobio Kageyama and other characters. Haikyu!! Day 2026 was a clear success and has left fans rather impatient for 2027.
OSHI NO KO SEASON 4 — THE FINAL SEASON TEASER VISUAL REVEALED!
One of the most bittersweet announcements of the week came for one of the modern era's most beloved and provocative anime. The official Oshi no Ko anime account released a teaser visual for Season 4, the Final Season, on August 16, 2026. The post carries the tagline "Guided by the stars, to the final stage," and describes Aquamarine Hoshino and Ruby Hoshino as two... going into their story's ultimate conclusion.
OSHI NO KO Season 4 (Final Season) anime officially revealed a teaser visual and trailer. The reveal came with a genuinely special promotional event: Takeo Ootsuka, who voices Aqua, and Yurie Igoma, who voices Ruby, both appeared, along with Megumi Han and Rumi Ookubo. An archive stream of the event is on sale until August 23.
Oshi no Ko began as a manga by Aka Akasaka and artist Mengo Yokoyari that captured global attention for its unflinching, provocative examination of the entertainment industry — idol culture, the pressures on child stars, tabloid media, and the psychological toll of fame — wrapped in a supernatural revenge narrative involving reincarnation. The anime adaptation became one of the most talked-about series of the 2020s, and confirming the Final Season means the story is approaching its ultimate conclusion. No broadcast date and no release window has been announced for Season 4. The official Season 4 page still lists only the Season 3 schedule, so anyone expecting a premiere date from this reveal will have to wait for a later announcement. But the confirmation itself — with the emotional cast reunion event — is enough to send the fandom into a wave of anticipation and reflection on how far Aqua and Ruby's story has come.
APOTHECARY DIARIES SEASON 3 — OPENING THEME BY YORUSHIKA CONFIRMED, NEW TRAILER!
Building on last week's October 2 premiere date confirmation, The Apothecary Diaries Season 3 delivered even more exciting news this week. The Apothecary Diaries Season 3 revealed a new trailer, visual, opening theme by Yorushika, and October 2 premiere.
Yorushika performing the opening theme is an absolutely wonderful piece of casting for this show's musical identity. Yorushika — the duo of singer suis and composer n-buna — is one of the most critically respected and emotionally resonant acts in contemporary Japanese music, known for lyrically dense, atmospheric songs that blend literary sensibility with beautiful melodic composition. Their involvement in Apothecary Diaries Season 3's opening theme signals the continued prestige-level treatment this production has received across every season, and fans have been eagerly anticipating the full song since the announcement dropped.
The new trailer and visual continue building anticipation for the two-cour Season 3 run, which promises to bring Maomao's continuing mystery-solving and pharmaceutical adventures — alongside her complicated relationship with Jinshi — to Crunchyroll audiences worldwide, including India, starting October 2.
SUMMER 2026 RANKINGS SHAKE-UP: Saga of Tanya the Evil Dethrones Jaadugar!
The Summer 2026 anime season's competitive rankings had a genuine shake-up this week. Saga of Tanya the Evil hits #1 in both the weekly and cumulative rankings, dethroning Jaadugar. This is a significant development in how fans are engaging with the season's crowded and excellent field of contenders — Saga of Tanya the Evil II's dark, tactically brilliant military isekai storytelling has clearly connected with audiences on a level that has now surpassed even Naoko Yamada's critically adored Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia.
This ranking shift reflects the genuinely competitive nature of the Summer 2026 season, where The Ghost in the Shell, Sparks of Tomorrow, The Elusive Samurai Season 2, Mushoku Tensei Season 3 (now deep into its Chaos Breaker Arc), and Saga of Tanya the Evil II have all traded positions across different polls and platforms throughout the season. For anime fans trying to decide what to prioritize in their weekly watchlist, this competitive field of genuinely excellent options is a wonderful problem to have.
DEATH NOTE: THE MUSICAL — CRITICAL REVIEW FROM ANN, STILL RUNNING AT THE BARBICAN!
With Death Note: The Musical continuing its run in London, Anime News Network published its full critical review of the production this week. Death Note: The Musical is very good fun, and that's both its main virtue and its biggest failing. Death Note: The Musical, now playing at London's Barbican Centre until 12 September, is thoroughly entertaining, full of the zingy energy you expect in a stage musical, and it's packed with tricks and ideas. What's missing is... — the review goes on to note some of the deeper thematic and moral complexity of the source material that gets somewhat streamlined for the stage format, a common tension in adapting Death Note's genuinely dark psychological themes into an entertaining theatrical experience.
Regardless of the critical nuances, the musical continues to run through September 12 at one of London's most prestigious performance venues, and its continued popularity through its run reflects the genuine appetite for high-quality anime theatrical adaptations that has been building throughout 2026 — from Spirited Away's world tour to Dan Da Dan's Tokyo stage play premiering later this month.

CLOSING THOUGHTS: Anime NYC Proved Once Again That Anime Has No Ceiling
Looking back at August 16 to August 23, 2026, this week is a genuinely perfect illustration of exactly how enormous and ambitious the anime industry has become. Anime NYC alone — a single convention weekend — delivered enough major announcements to fill months of ordinary news cycles: Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2's date, Blue Eye Samurai's Season 2 AND Season 3 confirmations, Fool Night's historic Sunrise x SHAFT debut date, Bass X Machina's steampunk western vision starring Brian Tyree Henry, LEGO ONE PIECE's playful trailer, and THE ONE PIECE's stunning key visual that finally answered the WIT Studio mystery that had kept the entire anime world guessing for over a week.
Add to that the emotional weight of Oshi no Ko entering its Final Season, Haikyu!! Day's flood of new content for one of anime's most beloved sports franchises, Apothecary Diaries confirming Yorushika for its Season 3 opening theme, and the continued critical conversation around Death Note: The Musical in London — and you have a week that captures everything wonderful about being an anime fan in 2026. This is an industry that produces classic revivals, bold originals, prestige animated dramas, and beloved franchise continuations simultaneously, at a scale and quality that has genuinely never been higher.
And for India, this week's gift of Mob Psycho 100 in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu — joining Overlord's recent Hindi debut — continues a beautiful trend of the anime industry finally, properly investing in Indian-language accessibility. Classroom of the Elite arriving on Netflix India adds yet another beloved series to the platforms Indian fans already use every day.
